I am honoured to welcome to the fold, the person I have not only looked up to throughout my music career but hugely respect as a person who knows what time it is!
Never afraid to speak his mind and call people out when he needs to, I believe DJ Pelt will bring all of us valuable insight on what it takes to follow a path. His knowledge and story will shine through in upcoming articles and opinions.
Below is Pelt’s bio which will provide you a general insight into the man.
like many dejays I was playing with audio as a kid using multiple tape players. the first thing I bought with my wages? oh yes, you guessed it. turntables and the obsession began. didn’t take me long to get to grips with mixing, entering DJ comps, then onto hip hop battles and spinnin tunes all over Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
I lived a short train ride out of London and loved buying tunes, checking the weekly radio shows & mixtapes. it consumed my world and my contacts were growing and so were opportunities to play at bigger events/festivals. by the time I was twenty, I was entering studio work, buying samplers and studio gear. my focus soon shifted towards production and landed a record contract with profile records in 93.
Spent the next few years learning production and recording tunes. for me, this period was the best period in hip hop due to the number of quality releases every week. but since 95 onwards the bulk of my time has been taken up with studio wk. it wasn’t until about ten years ago I was in Cambridge and met Mr Woods to buy his funk/jazz records.
He had just started a Mixcloud page with Juke Flywalker called Jukejoint so we started meeting up, compiling mixes for him and the ever-growing Jukejoint crew. It was around the same time I had done a remix of a big emcee from New England and it made a few waves in USA and Europe which opened the door to further production work with American mc’s which brings us up to date.
I never wanted to be famous, I find it a bit too fake all that hoop jumping and pretentious bullshit. I’m blessed to have been active in something I love all my adult life. I follow my own light, always have, always will.
